Belmont, San Mateo County
Belmont grew up around the country estate of William Ralston, the San Francisco banker who expanded a villa here in the 1860s into an eighty-room mansion for entertaining. Ralston Hall, a National Historic Landmark, now stands on the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University. The city incorporated in 1926 and climbs from the bayside rail line into wooded hills.
